Acts 2:36-47

 Countryside Bible Church 10-24-99

Intro: We find a revealing and exciting phrase in our text today. In speaking of the church Acts 2:47 says, "the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved".

This reminds us of Jesusí words to Peter

Matthew 16:18 ... on this rock I will build my church...

Where the true message of the gospel is preached the supernatural still takes place. What looks to us like a purely human even of one coming forward to express faith in Christ and be baptized is more than just a human activity. It is the Lord at work adding to his church.

I. A Large Number Initially.

Beginning with the 3000 that were baptized in response to Peterís preaching on the day of Pentecost, the new faith grew very fast.

Acts 4:4  ... the number of men grew to about five thousand.

Acts 5:14 ... more and more men and women believed ("MULTITUDES", KJV) in the Lord and were added ...

Acts 6:7  ...... number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests...

Acts 9:42  ... all over Joppa, and many people believed in the Lord.

Acts 13:44, 46-49 ... almost the whole city. (Pisidian Antioch) ... The word of the Lord spread through the whole region

Acts 15:35 ... where they and many others taught and preached the word of the Lord.

Acts 17:11-12 ... [12] Many of the Jews believed, as did also a number of prominent Greek women and many Greek men.

Acts 18:7-8 ... his entire household believed in the Lord; and many of the Corinthians ...

Acts 18:9-11  ... because I have many people in this city." [11] So Paul stayed for a year and a half, teaching them the word of God.

Acts 14:1  ... a great number of Jews and Gentiles believed.

Acts 14:21  ... and won a large number of disciples.

Acts 17:4 (Thessalonica) Some of the Jews ... as did a large number of God-fearing Greeks and not a few prominent women.

Acts 17:34 (Athens) A few men became followers ... and a number of others.

Acts 19:17-20  ... [18] Many of those who believed ... A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas. [20] In this way the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power.

Acts 21:17-20  ... how many thousands of Jews have believed, and all of them are zealous for the law.

Acts 11:19-24  ... as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus and Antioch, ... telling them the good news about the Lord Jesus. [21] The Lord's hand was with them, and a great number of people believed ... and a great number of people were brought to the Lord.
